25mm Ultra Wide-angle 5x Optical Zoom
f2.8-5.9 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens
The DMC-FX580(FX550) features a 25mm ultra wide-angle* 5x optical zoom f/2.8-5.9 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens. Incorporating Panasonic's advanced optical technologies, this lens system is comprised of 7 elements in 6 groups with 4 aspherical lenses / 6 aspherical surfaces, including a unevenly thick concave meniscus Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical lens (EA lens). This lens system puts an unprecedented level of wide-angle performance in a slim and compact camera body. Naturally, the lens meets LEICA's stringent standards. This high-quality lens combines high brightness and minimal distortion to capture 25mm ultra wide-angle* photos with outstanding, corner-to-corner detail.

About Twice the Shooting Area – Advantages of the 25mm Wide-angle Lens*
The 25mm ultra wide-angle lens* provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling.

The entire structure in the background fits in, even when taken from a short distance.

Landscapes spread far and wide from the window.

5x Optical Zoom and Up to 9.8x Extra Optical Zoom*1
![]()
The DMC-FX580(FX550) is equipped with a 5x optical zoom lens (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-125mm). The Extra Optical Zoom function uses the center part of the CCD to extend this 5x zoom ratio to powerful 9.8x zoom (35mm film camera equivalent: 244mm) at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. Adding the Extra Optical Zoom to the 4x digital zoom*2 extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 39.1x.
*1 At a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. In the U.S.A. market, the Extra Optical Zoom is called the Extended Optical Zoom.
*2 As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.
Easy Zoom Function

The Easy Zoom function makes zoom shots fast and easy. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 5x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 5x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 9.8x power of the Extra Optical Zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.
* If the resolution is set to a level higher than 3-megapixel, the camera will automatically change it to 3-megapixel. Pressing the button a third time will return the lens to the wide-end (1x) position, and reset the resolution to the ordinary level. If the resolution is set to 3-megapixel or less, the image will be taken at the set level.
1/2.33-inch 12.1-megapixel High-resolution CCD

The DMC-FX580(FX550) features a 1/2.33-inch CCD with effective 12.1-megapixel high-resolution.
What You Get with 12.1-megapixel Resolution
Images remain clear and sharp even when they are enlarged to A2 size (594 x 420 mm). An A2 photo is large enough to show a newborn baby or the head and chest of an adult in actual size. Photos in ordinary sizes (127 mm x 89 mm or 178 mm x 127 mm) come out beautifully at 3 megapixels. You can trim the photos any way you want.

Even 8-megapixel resolution provides sufficiently high-quality photos.

Trimming half of the image produces 6-megapixel resolution.

Trimming down to 1/4 of the image still results in 3-megapixel resolution, which is plenty for ordinary 4" x 6" prints.
Venus Engine V

The image-processing engine, Venus Engine V, uses advanced signal processing to give you beautiful images even when the sensitivity is high. Multi-task signal processing is employed for all images to enable high-speed, high-performance shooting. Venus Engine V, with even greater accurate detection system, makes it possible to detect specific person’s face in new Face Recognition function. Along with its extremely high performance, Venus Engine V reduces power consumption thanks to a number of energy efficiency improvements.
Higher Image Quality with Advanced Signal Processing

Luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately in a Panasonic’s advanced noise reduction system. In addition, the Venus Engine V enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution while color noise is less noticeable in shadows and other dark areas even when shooting with low sensitivity.
High Speed Response
The DMC-FX580(FX550) slashes the release time lag to around 0.007 second minimum. This makes DMC-FX580(FX550) an extremely quick, responsive camera. It lets you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and is a pleasure to use.
MEGA Burst Consecutive Shooting in Full Resolution
The DMC-FX580(FX550) lets you snap off consecutive shots at approx. 2.3 frames per second*1 in full resolution. The Unlimited*2 Consecutive Shooting function lets you keep on shooting until the memory card is full. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like best and delete the rest. You can also select High-speed Burst Mode*3 or Flash Burst Mode*3 from Scene Mode.
*1 Maximum of 5 images in Standard mode and 3 images in Fine mode.
*2 The consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
*3 In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.
* The burst speed values given above apply when the shutter speed is 1/60 or faster and when the flash is not activated. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size and battery life. The burst speed is constant regardless of the transfer speed of the card.
* The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size and battery life.
Low Energy Consumption – Around 350 Shots on a Single Battery Charge
![]()
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine V consumes only 84% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine IV. This improvement works together with an efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which became much smaller to fit into slimmer camera bodies, to achieve a longer battery life of approx. 350 pictures on a single charge*.
* Based on the CIPA standard.
ID–Security Li-ion Battery
