A 27mm Wide-angle 18x Optical Zoom f/2.8-4.4 LEICA DC Lens

A 27- 486mm f/2.8-4.4 LEICA DC Lens in a Compact Body

The DMC-FZ28 features a 27mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 18x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 27- 486mm) in a compact body. The bright, large-diameter lens with f/2.8 to 4.4 aperture has minimal distortion and captures images with corner-to-corner clarity. The lens unit comprises 11 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lenses and 3 aspherical lenses, including a dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness.
You can also take advantage of powerful 18x zoom in motion picture recording.

Powerful 18x and Up to 32.1x Extra Optical Zoom

The 18x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 486mm) lets you capture dynamic images of sports action, animals in nature, and any subject that you can't get close to.

Plus, the Extra Optical Zoom* uses the center of the CCD to further extend the powerful 18x optical zoom when a resolution of less than 10.1-megapixel is used. This extends the zoom ratio up to 32.1x (35mm equivalent: 866mm) for images with 3-megapixel resolution or less. Adding the Extra Optical Zoom to the 4x digital zoom** extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 128x (35mm equivalent: 3,456mm).

*In the U.S.A. market, the Extra Optical Zoom is called the Extended Optical Zoom.
**As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

A Stunning New World Created by the DMC-FZ28

486mm, f/4.4 Shots with a Beautiful Soft Focus

The 18x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 486mm) of the DMC-FZ28, with its bright wide-open aperture of F4.4 produces stunning portraits with softly focused backgrounds. The high-quality lenses of this lens system also ensure clear and sharp focusing of your subject in telephoto shots, and provide superb resolution and contrast for smoothly shaded facial complexions.

Tele Macro

When MF (manual focus) or AF Macro is selected, the Tele Macro Mode automatically turns on, so you can use the 11x-18x zoom to get clear shots as close as 1 m* (2 m in normal mode) from your subject. It gives you great macro shots with beautiful, softly focused backgrounds, and a comfortable shooting posture.

* Minimum distance is 1cm at wide end.

1cm Macro

The DMC-FZ28 lets you get as close as 1 cm to your subject. Simply press the AF Macro button to switch to Macro Mode. When the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode is selected, Macro Mode is activated automatically. Ideal for taking dynamic, intricate close-ups of flowers and insects, this feature is also great for rendering artwork and handicrafts in spectacular detail and rich expression.

1/2.33-inch 10.1-megapixel High-resolution CCD

New

The DMC-FZ28 features a new, high-quality CCD manufactured completely in-house by Panasonic. Slightly larger than previous types, this 1/2.33-inch CCD fully supports the camera's 10.1-megapixel resolution.

What You Get with 10.1-megapixel Resolution

It is generally recommended that images for large, A3-size (420 mm x 297 mm) prints have a resolution of at least 8 megapixels. The 10-megapixel resolution of the DMC-FZ28 naturally satisfies this condition, and also lets you output photos in A4 size (297 mm x 210 mm) with image quality that rivals the 300-dpi resolution of commercially printed materials. Photos in ordinary sizes (127 mm x 89 mm or 178 mm x 127 mm) come out beautifully at 3 megapixels. You can trim the photos any way you want.

Trim to 3 megapixels.

Handy Zoom Functions

Focusing Distance Display

The allowable shooting range is displayed above the zoom bar. This lets you readjust the distance between the camera and the subject, or switch to Macro Mode to shoot sharp, clear pictures. The measurement unit can be selected from either feet or meters.

Zoom Speed – 2 step

This function allows you to control the zoom operation in two speeds, Low and Fast, with the zoom lever. Rotate the lever a small amount for slow zooming, and a larger amount for high-speed zooming. This makes it easy to zoom in and out quickly when you need to, or to slow down for finer zooming control.

Zoom Resume

The Zoom Resume function lets you decide on your composition before you shoot, so you can be prepared for sudden opportunities like a grand opening event or a photo of birds in the wild. It stores the zoom position (magnification) in memory, so you can shoot with the same zoom setting once the power is turned on again. This helps to make sure you don't miss those great spur-of-the-moment shots.
