Creative HD Movie in AVCHD Lite

HD Movie in AVCHD Lite

In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-LX5 can record high-definition motion images in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format.
In movie recording, the DMC-LX5 goes further than simply recording HD movies. A host of creative options including Creative Movie Mode, My Color Mode and Film Mode are available for more extended expression not only in photography but also in videography.

Intelligent Resolution Technology

The image quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the new image processing technology “Intelligent Resolution*1”, incorporated in the Venus Engine for the DMC-LX5. By detecting the signals whether they are at edges of the subject, they compose detailed texture or just a soft gradation first and give appropriate enhancement to the edges and textured areas respectively. Unlike the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative Intelligent Resolution precisely performs optimum signal processing to give a whole image outstandingly natural clearness with fine details. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in movie recording as well as photo recording.

Formats to Match Your Needs

AVCHD Lite: Optimal for viewing on a VIERA TV or with a DIGA recorder / player.

Motion JPEG: Optimal for viewing or editing on a computer.

Comparison of Recording Length (per a single charge of battery)*2

*1 The Intelligent Resolution function turns ON in the iA Mode or in some Scene Modes. In other cases, turn ON the Intelligent Resolution from the menu to activate it.
*2 Approx. Maximum recording time, HD movie recording at 720P. The length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card. • For Europe, motion images can be recorded continuously for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds. The maximum continuous recording time (up to 29 minutes 59 seconds) is displayed on the screen. • Use a card with SD Speed Class* with "Class 4" or higher when recording motion images in AVCHD Lite. Also, use a card with SD Speed Class with "Class 6" or higher when recording motion images in Motion JPEG. *SD Speed Class is the speed standard regarding continuous writing.
*3 QuickTime Motion JPEG. Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording Motion JPEG.
*4 These are standard times taken at a temperature of 23°C (73.4°F) and a humidity of 50%RH. The time available for recording varies depending on the environment, the interval between recordings, and the manner of use. Actual recordable time is the time available for recording when repeating actions such as switching the power supply [ON]/[OFF], starting/stopping recording, zoom operation, etc.

Note

High Quality Sound

The DMC-LX5 features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful movies with outstanding sound.

• Dolby and the double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories.

3 Lux Minimum Illumination

The minimum illumination is as low as 3 lux thanks to the f/2.0 super bright LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens and the high sensitivity CCD.

Wind Cut

The Wind Cut function is available to block out most of the noise from background wind. This gives you higher quality sound when taking images on breezy days.

3.8x Optical Zoom

The DMC-LX5 lets you use a 3.8x zoom* for motion images. It takes you right up close to images like animals and sports scenes.

* 25-95 mm in 35mm camera equivalent in movie recording.

Motion Picture Button

Motion image recording can be started by pressing a dedicated button on the top of the camera — an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera's settings will be carried over when switched to motion image recording.

POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode

For more effective countermeasure against blur, the Active Mode is available for an option of image stabilization in video recording. This mode is especially effective in active video recording such as shooting while walking.

Creative Movie Mode

Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital compact cameras, the DMC-LX5 also features a Creative Movie Mode, which lets you set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out.

* The movie is optimized for web view by file conversion.

My Color Mode / Film Mode / Happy Mode

You can use the My Color Mode and Film Mode for shooting movies. They render highly unique expressions by matching the colors to your subject and surroundings. In the iA Mode, you can apply Happy Mode as well, for even brighter coloring.

Miniature Effect

In Miniature Effect Mode, the video recorded is played back in 10x fast-forwarding making it more comical to watch*.

* Sound will not be recorded with Miniature Effect and approximately 1/10 of the time period is recorded. (If you record for 10 minutes, the resulting motion picture recording will be approximately 1 minute long)

iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode for Movie

The iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode is also available in motion image recording. The iA Mode automatically and simultaneously activates 4 advanced detection functions: The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) to detect hand-shake, the Face Detection AF/AE to detect faces in the frame, the Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, and the Intelligent Exposure to detect the ambient light. Since the camera automatically optimizes the settings, it lets you shoot stunning HD movies every time.

Shake Detection - POWER O.I.S.*1

Gyrosensors detect hand-shaking and the O.I.S. lens shifts to compensate, helping prevent blurring caused by hand-shaking.

Face Detection - Face Detection AF/AE*1

The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure.

Scene Detection - Intelligent Scene Selector*2

The Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects any of the Scenery, Portrait, Macro, or Low Light Mode accordingly.

Light Detection - Intelligent Exposure*1

By detecting the intensity of the ambient light and adjusting the exposure accordingly, the Intelligent Exposure prevents blown highlights and blocked shadows.

*1 The POWER O.I.S., Face Detection AF/AE and Intelligent Exposure are automatically turned on in the iA Mode and can be turned on or off in the P/A/S/M Mode or some Scene Modes.
*2 With some subject and shooting conditions, it is just not possible to judge the best shooting details. When this happens, it is recommended that you shoot with the Scene Mode that best suits your purpose.

Scene Mode for Movie

You are naturally supposed to take the same subject in the same situation when you start recording movie while recording photos. So you do not have to set the Scene Mode again for movie recording once you are in the Scene Mode of photo recording. The result is a beautiful movie best optimized for the scene.

Video Divide

You can divide a single video into two parts using only the camera. This is handy for compiling memorable scenes, and deleting unwanted scenes to free up space on your memory card while you are traveling.

Cut Animation

You can cut out a clear still image from a movie in the camera thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology.

Seamless Slideshows with Photos and Movies

The DMC-LX5 has many slideshow options for both photos and movies. They help you to recollect memorable moments in a seamless, chronological order. You can also select and play only photos, only movies, or only AVCHD Lite movies. Choose whichever slideshow you want.

VIERA Link / HDMI Compatibility

Just connect the DMC-LX5 to an HDTV and you're ready to view your photos and movies in beautiful high-definition. Motion images recorded in AVCHD Lite on SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV. Simply insert the card into the VIERA Image Viewer (SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot) on a VIERA TV or DIGA recorder / player to playback your content. Alternatively, you can use an optional mini HDMI cable to output the motion images you took from the DMC-LX5 directly to the TV for VIERA Link. You can take maximum advantage of LUMIX's playback functions including the slideshow in which both photos and movies are integrated in the timeline, Face Recognition playback or calendar display and so on. All control is possible using only the TV's remote control.

• The HDMI output function requires the optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 mini HDMI cable. The output resolution of the DMC-LX5 can be selected as 1,080i, 720p or 480p (576p in PAL system). Please confirm that the TV you are connecting to has an HDMI input terminal compatible with the selected signal. Depending on the cable used, some functions may not be possible. Panasonic HDMI cables are highly recommended.

Note

Note

• Motion images and images with audio taken with the DMC-LX5 may not always be able to be played back with cameras by other manufacturers. Playback may also not be possible with certain Panasonic digital cameras (LUMIX) launched before December 2008, and some cameras launched in 2009 (FS, LS Series). • AVCHD Lite motion images recorded with the image quality set to SH/H/L mode (1,280 × 720) cannot be played on AVCHD-compatible digital video cameras. • AVCHD motion images recorded with AVCHD-compatible digital video cameras cannot be played on the DMC-LX5. • AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played on a device that does not support the AVCHD standard. • SDHC Memory Cards and SDXC Memory Cards can be used only in equipment that is compatible with their respective formats. • If the computer being used does not support SDXC Memory Cards, a message prompting you to format may appear. (Doing so will cause recorded images to be erased so do not choose to format.) If the card is not recognized, please refer to the support site.
