The 28mm Wide-angle* 10x Optical Zoom LEICA DC Lens

The DMC-TZ5/TZ4(TZ15/TZ11) features a 28mm wide-angle* 10x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens (equivalent to a 28mm-280mm zoom on a 35mm film camera) in an ultra-compact body. The lens unit comprises eleven elements in nine groups, with three aspherical lenses, including dual-sided aspherical meniscus lens, to achieve high optical performance while preserving compactness. Powerful 10x Optical Zoom with Handy New Zoom Function

The DMC-TZ5/TZ4(TZ15/TZ11) is equipped with a 10x optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 280mm). The Extra Optical Zoom* function uses the center part of the CCD to extend this 10x zoom ratio to powerful 16.9x zoom (TZ5/TZ15, 35mm equivalent: 473mm) / 15.9x zoom (TZ4/TZ11, 35mm equivalent: 445mm) at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. Adding the Extra Optical Zoom to the 4x digital zoom** extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 67.5x (TZ5/TZ15, 35mm equivalent: 1890.0mm) / 63.8x (TZ4/TZ11, 35mm equivalent: 1786.0mm).

*In the U.S.A. market, the Extra Optical Zoom is called the Extended Optical Zoom.
**As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Now, zooming is even easier. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 10x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 10x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 16.9x (TZ5/TZ15) / 15.9x (TZ4/TZ11) power of the Extra Optical Zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.

*If the resolution is set to a level higher than 3-megapixel, the camera will automatically change it to 3-megapixel. Pressing the button a third time will return the lens to the wide-end (1x) position, and reset the resolution to the ordinary level. If the resolution is set to 3-megapixel or less, the image will be taken at the set level.

The Zoom Resume function lets you decide on your composition before you shoot, so you can be prepared for sudden opportunities like a grand opening event or a photo of birds in the wild. It stores the zoom position (magnification) in memory, so you can shoot with the same zoom setting once the power is turned on again. This helps to make sure you don't miss those great spur-of-the-moment shots.
