There are two ways to record precious memories: with photos or movies. Conventionally, digital still cameras have been designed for shooting photos, and camcorders for recording movies. You may use a camcorder when you want to record special events. However, there are many chances for you to record both photos and movies in everyday life, but you cannot always take all of your equipment with you. The LUMIX DMC-ZS3(TZ7) lets you do exactly that, and is especially suitable for recording short movies on the fly, with high-definition quality and snapshot ease. This is all made possible by the world's first* way of recording movies by digital still camera - AVCHD Lite.

HD Movie in AVCHD Lite

AVCHD Lite Advantages
AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) is a practical format exclusively developed for recording High Definition motion pictures. The "AVCHD Lite" is a subset of the "AVCHD format" for digital cameras with HD video recording of 720P. Compared to the Motion JPEG which records full information of every frame to make a sequence of still images, the AVCHD Lite records motion images with high-efficient compression optimized exclusively for motion picture recording. As a result, stunningly beautiful movie even in High Definition can be recorded with almost double length.

*1 Approx. Maximum recording time, HD movie recording at 720P.
For Europe, motion pictures can be recorded continuously for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds. The maximum continuous recording time (up to 29 minutes 59 seconds) is displayed on the screen.
Motion pictures and pictures with audio taken with the DMC-ZS3(TZ7) may not always be able to be played back with cameras by other manufacturers. Playback may also not be possible with certain Panasonic digital cameras (LUMIX) launched before December 2008, and some cameras launched in 2009 (FS, LS Series).
*2 QuickTime Motion JPEG. The length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-picture recording.)
*3 These are standard times taken at a temperature of 23°C(73.4°F) and a humidity of 50%.
The time available for recording varies depending on the environment, the interval between recordings, and the manner of use.
Actual recordable time is the time available for recording when repeating actions such as switching the power supply [ON]/[OFF], starting/stopping recording, zoom operation etc.
DMC-ZS3(TZ7) Audio Is Clear Too
The DMC-ZS3(TZ7) features Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful motion images with outstanding stereo sound.
In addition, a Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind.
Expanded Playback Range
Motion images recorded in AVCHD Lite on SDHC/SD Memory Cards*1 are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV. Simply insert the card into the VIERA Image Viewer (SDHC/SD Memory Card slot) on VIERA TV or DIGA Blu-ray Disc Player to playback your contents*2. Alternatively, you can use an optional mini HDMI cable to output the motion images you took from the DMC-ZS3(TZ7) directly to the TV for VIERA Link*3. You can take maximum advantage of LUMIX’s playback functions including the slideshow in which both still and motion images integrated in the timeline, category playback according to the scene mode you used or calendar display and so on. All control is possible using only the TV's remote control.

*1 The SDHC Memory Card can be used only if the SDHC logo is indicated on the equipment or in the operation manual. It cannot be used with equipment that supports only the SD Memory Card.
*2 AVCHD Lite motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the AVCHD standard.
*3 Requires the optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 HDMI mini-cable. The output resolution of the DMC-ZS3(TZ7) can be selected as 1080i, 720p or 480p. Please confirm that the TV you are connecting to has a HDMI input terminal compatible with the selected signal.
Depending on the cable used, this function may not be possible. Panasonic HDMI cables are highly recommended.
iA (Intelligent Auto) Movie

Motion image recording can be started by pressing a dedicated button on the camera's back panel — an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera’s settings will be carried over when switched to motion picture recording.
Now on the DMC-ZS3(TZ7), the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode is also available in motion image recording. iA Mode automatically and simultaneously activates 4 advanced detection functions: MEGA O.I.S. to detect hand-shake, Face Detection to detect faces in the frame, Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, and Intelligent Exposure to detect the ambient light. Since the camera automatically optimizes the settings, it lets you shoot stunning HD motion images every time.
Gyrosensors detect hand-shaking and the O.I.S. lens shifts to compensate, helping to prevent blurring caused by hand-shaking.
The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects a maximum of 15 faces at once, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change.
The Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either the Scenery, Portrait, Macro, or Low Light Mode accordingly.
By detecting the intensity of the ambient light and adjusting the exposure accordingly, Intelligent Exposure prevents blown highlights and blocked shadows.
*1 MEGA O.I.S. and Face Detection AF/AE automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Mode or some Scene Modes.
*2 With some subject and shooting conditions, it is just not possible to judge the best shooting details. When this happens, it is recommended that you shoot with the Scene Mode that best suits your purpose.
Scene Modes for Movie
![]()

You are naturally supposed to take a same subject in the same situation when you start recording movie while recording photos. So that you do not have to set the Scene Mode again for movie recording once you are in the scene mode of photo recording. The result is beautiful movie best optimized for the scene.
Zoom in Motion Picture
The DMC-ZS3(TZ7) also lets you use zooming when taking motion pictures. Its powerful 12x optical zoom (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-300mm) is ideal for capturing dynamic video clips of sports action or animals in nature.
