25mm Ultra Wide-angle 12x Optical Zoom LEICA DC Lens

The DMC-ZS5(TZ8) features a 25mm ultra wide-angle* 12x optical zoom f/3.3-4.9 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens (35mm camera equivalent: 25-300mm). Incorporating Panasonic's advanced optical technologies, this lens system is comprised of 10 elements in 8 groups, with 2 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) lenses and 2 aspherical lenses / 3 aspherical surfaces while preserving compactness. This lens system enables a remarkable 25 to 300mm range of focal length in this compact body. The powerful zoom of the DMC-ZS5(TZ8) can be freely controlled even when shooting motion images. Inheriting the fine rendering and outstanding quality of the LEICA ELMAR lens, this easy-to-carry camera delivers beautiful images any time, any place.

Powerful 12x Optical Zoom

The DMC-ZS5(TZ8) features a powerful 12x optical zoom lens (35mm camera equivalent: 25-300mm). This gives you highly natural expressions from people and animals that you can't get close to. It is also available in movie recording with the mechanism designed to minimize the noise of auto focusing or zooming. And its slim, compact, pocket-sized body can easily go wherever you do － for both everyday snapshots and traveling.

The DMC-ZS5(TZ8) takes advantage of its 12x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 300mm) . You can snap photos that capture the subject in a clear, sharp focus while giving the background a beautiful soft focus.

25mm Ultra Wide-angle Lens

The 25mm ultra wide-angle lens* has about twice the shooting area as a standard 35mm lens. This enhances all kinds of shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at an indoor party or shooting a large structure or sweeping landscape while traveling.

12.1-megapixel with 1/2.33-inch CCD
Multiple Aspect Ratios / Multi Aspect Mode

The DMC-ZS5(TZ8) features a large 1/2.33-inch CCD. Conventional cameras generally use almost the entire CCD area when recording an image. The DMC-ZS5(TZ8), however, employs a 1/2.33-inch CCD with a total resolution of 14.5-megapixel. Using only about a 12.1-megapixel area of this large CCD makes it possible to give all 3 aspect ratios — 16:9, 3:2, and 4:3 — the same angle of view with lens settings from 25mm to 300mm*¹. And rather than digitally producing "simulated" images, the DMC-ZS5(TZ8) captures the actual, real-life image for each one of the aspect ratios at the ultra-wide 25mm setting. Plus, the Multi-aspect Mode*² lets the camera take an image in all 3 aspect ratios simultaneously, so you can choose the best one after shooting.

What You Get with 12.1-megapixel Resolution

Images remain clear and sharp even when they are enlarged to A2 size (594 x 420 mm). An A2 photo is large enough to show a newborn baby or the head and chest of an adult in actual size. Photos in ordinary sizes (127 x 89 mm or 178 x 127 mm) come out beautifully at 3-megapixel. You can trim the photos any way you want.

Easy Zoom

The Easy Zoom function makes zoom shots fast and easy. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 12x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 12x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 23.4x power of the Extra Optical Zoom*. This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.

* If the resolution is set to a level higher than 3-megapixel, the camera will automatically change it to 3-megapixel. Pressing the button a third time will return the lens to the wide-end (1x) position, and reset the resolution to the ordinary level. If the resolution is set to 3-megapixel or less, the image will be taken at the set level.

16x Intelligent Zoom / 23.4x Extra Optical Zoom

Thanks to the newly incorporated Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom is available with the DMC-ZS5(TZ8) which extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 12x optical can virtually extend to 16x equivalent. Furthermore, the Extra Optical Zoom function that extends zoom power to 23.4x* by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer.

Sonic Speed AF

The Sonic Speed AF system in the DMC-ZS5(TZ8) has a maximum speed of approx. 0.35 second (wide-end) / 0.41 second (tele-end) for auto focusing*. It includes numerous re-engineering enhancements, including a higher-speed actuator, optimized algorithms and parallel software processing. The result is fast and accurate AF performance. You can quickly get moving subjects in focus, such as when you're shooting sports scenes.

* Using the 1-area AF.

Fast Start-up Time

The previous linear processing program has been replaced with parallel processing to save 0.68 second off the start-up time*. This has resulted in ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 1.12 seconds.

Release Time Lag

The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.005 second, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.
