LUMIX Special Features

The DMC-G3 features the world's fastest level*1 of Light Speed AF featuring approx. 0.1 second*2 which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by doubling the drive speed from 60 fps to 120 fps.
Not only the accuracy but also the speed excels by far than the high-end digital SLRs with phase-difference AF with the advanced contrast AF system in the DMC-G3.
Combined with the touch AF control, setting and focusing at the subject is incredibly easy and quick, never missing the spur-of-the-moment.

The DMC-G3 adopts the contrast AF for its focus system. Compared with the phase-difference system AF, the contrast AF boasts higher accuracy even in shooting at small F value.
The phase-difference AF system is susceptible to mechanical margin of error. However, in the contrast AF system, focusing is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error occurs to achieve precise focusing.

* Theoretical image.
*1 The time for focusing on the subject is measured with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140) to move the lens position to “2m” from “infinity” position. The zoom position is in wide range. Panasonic measurement method.
*2 Approx. 0.1 sec with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S., approx. 0.18 sec with the LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm / F3.5-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S., approx. 0.15 sec with the LUMIX G VARIO 45-200mm / F4.0-5.6 / MEGA O.I.S.
• To get the best AF performance with the DMC-G3 and LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140), the firmware of LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm / F4.0-5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140) must be updated to ver. 1.3 or later.
The DMC-G3 incorporates full-area focusing which makes it possible to set focus on any point in the field of view. Frame composition is free and intuitive combining the touch-screen operation.

* Simulated image.

Contrast AF system* gives the DMC-G3 a variety of AF modes. There's an option that's just right for any shooting situation. With the AF mode button, you can choose the focus mode you want smoothly.
* Lenses that are not compatible with the contrast AF function can be used with manual focusing.
The Pinpoint AF function is incorporated in the DMC-G3 allowing more precise focus setting by further enlarging the focusing area. It assists, for example, setting focus right on the pupil in an eye. |
|
The 1-area AF function lets you focus on the subject in any part of the LCD – just touch the screen to point it out. You can also freely change the size of the AF frame. |
The camera divides the 23 AF areas into 9 groups. When you select one of the groups, the camera automatically selects the optimal area from that group. |
Touch the screen, and the DMC-G3 locks on and automatically "tracks" the subject as it moves, keeping on adjusting the focus settings for best results. |
This mode will point the auto focus to a selected location while detecting faces in the image. |

The Touch AF in video recording lets you enjoy professional-like rack focusing. Just by pointing the subject, the focus is shifted to it and let it stand out to attract attention.

In the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, simply touch the subject on the LCD and the DMC-G3 automatically selects the optimal Scene Mode.

You can enlarge the part by just a touch to select 1x, 4x, 5x or 10x and smoothly move the part by dragging it on the screen. The 4x enlarged view is displayed on the framing screen making it possible to set fine focus while composing the whole picture at the same time.
The AF+MF function provides more efficient, more precise focusing. After focusing with AF, simply turn the focus ring manually for even finer control.
The Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while the Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject*1. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take images quickly*2.
*1 The Quick AF does not work together with the AF Tracking.
*2 The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.
The newly developed Live MOS sensor helps to realize the high speed burst shooting. You can take a series of shots, then choose the ones you like the best and delete the rest.

The DMC-G3 can fire off up to approx. 4 fps in full 16.0-megapixel resolution with its mechanical shutter. Great for capturing fast subject motion, such as sports scenes or birds in flight.

Even higher-speed burst shooting is possible with the DMC-G3 when the electronic shutter is used – 20 fps at 4-megapixel*1 resolution. Great for capturing race cars and other subjects that are difficult to catch with the naked eyes.

*1 In the high speed burst shooting at 20 fps, the picture size is fixed to S-size in all aspects.
*2 Images can be taken until the capacity of the card becomes full. However the burst speed will become slower halfway. The exact timing of this depends on the aspect ratio, the picture size, the setting for the quality and the type of card used.
