LUMIX Special Features
The DMC-G3, the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens system camera*, achieves further downsizing by approx. 25% in size compared with the predecessor.
You'll find it small enough to take anywhere, yet sophisticated enough to take you as far into photography and videos as you want to go.
* For an interchangeable lens system camera with a viewfinder as of May 12, 2011.
* Body only / Excluding protrusions.
** Body, SD card, battery included.
Shutter Speed Effect Preview
Both the LVF (Live View Finder) and the LCD give you a Full-time Live View of what you're shooting with a field of view of approx. 100%. The viewing method can be selected to match your shooting conditions and composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting.
You can confirm the depth of field and shutter speed effects by pressing the Function button, if you select the Preview mode.
The DMC-G3’s large, bright 1,440,000-dot equiv. The LVF retains the outstanding viewability of an optical viewfinder and can also display information about camera settings that you can see without taking his or her eyes off the subject. This LVF also features approx. 1.4x / 0.7x* magnification, and approx. 100% field of view as the LCD for superbly accurate framing.
Reducing the color breakup by half in principle, this LVF assures stunning image view for any subject in any scenes. Together with the 60 fps Live View is made possible by the Live MOS sensor, which takes signals directly from the image sensor and sends them continuously to the LCD, in real time. This allows you, when composing a shot, to check the framing accurately from corner to corner.
* 35mm camera equivalent.
* Simulated image.
The DMC-G3 has a 3.0-inch 3:2 460,000-dot free-angle LCD that rotates 180° to the side and tilts 270° up and down, and gives you approx. 100% field of view. This is a highly practical feature for high-angle shots, like when you need to shoot over the heads of people at a parade, and enables accurate, dynamic framing for artistic low-angle shots, like when shooting at nearly ground level. It's extremely convenient when shooting with a tripod too.
The wide viewing angle of the LCD is also handy both for shooting and for viewing the results together with family and friends. And the Intelligent LCD function automatically adjusts the brightness in 11 steps according to the shooting conditions. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes approximately 1.4 times brighter than normal.
Brightness, saturation and colors of the LCD or the LVF can all be adjusted. This is handy because it lets you adjust them in advance, based on your computer display or other playback device.
The energy-saving Venus Engine and the genuine rechargeable lithium-ion battery work together to extend the shooting time of the DMC-G3, making it possible to take approx. 270 shots*1 or approx. 250 shots*2 on a single battery charge.

To elevate its operability even higher, the DMC-G3 adopts touch-control shooting. You can operate the auto focus and shutter release at the same time with just a touch, for a completely new way to shoot.
Plus, in the Custom setting, you can set ON/OFF of each touch control such as touch shutter, touch AF and touch display to make the camera more comfortable to operate for you.
You can operate the auto focus and shutter release at the same time with just a touch. This kind of intuitive touch operation lets you easily catch even fast-action sports shots where your subject is on the move. It also makes it easy to capture decisive moments with optimal framing and settings. And this function can be used while shooting videos too*.
* The picture aspect ratio will be fixed to 16:9.
With the DMC-G3, auto focus can be set at any part of the frame by simply touching the subject on the LCD. This lets you frame your shot easily and accurately. The Touch AF can be activated on the DMC-G3 even in video recording. This function quickly focuses on moving subjects, and also enables professional-like rack focusing.
In the manual focusing, you can enlarge the part by just a touch to select 1x, 4x, 5x or 10x and smoothly move the part by dragging it on the screen. This makes it easier to check that you've got a sharp focus.
In the iA Plus Mode and the Creative Control Mode, the range of defocus and exposure compensation can be adjusted by just moving the slider with your finger. In the iA Plus Mode, you can adjust white balance, too.
The touch-screen operation excels not only for shooting but also for playing back images with outstanding visibility. You can drag the image across the screen with a finger to browse a collection of photos as you flip over the pages of the book.
The 12/30 Multi Display shows you images in a small thumbnail format. The DMC-G3 makes it smooth and easy to find the exact shot you want even from a large number of thumbnail images.
The Zoom Playback has become even more convenient. By simply touching the part to be enlarged, you can zoom in as much as max. 16x. The zoom area can be dragged in any of four directions for speedy and precise confirmation.
If dust or other foreign matter gets inside the camera when you're changing lenses, it could cling to the image sensor and show up as a spot in your photos. The Dust Reduction System in the DMC-G3 helps eliminate this possibility by placing the Supersonic Wave Filter in front of the Live MOS sensor, between the low-pass filter and shutter. Vibrating vertically around 80,000 times per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively.
A Camera without Dust Reduction
Flow of the Dust Reduction System
1. Power off.
2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust.
3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image.
The DMC-G3’s compact, stylish round-form design adopting aluminum dispels impression for conventional big, heavy and colorless digital SLRs.
With the durable metal mount surrounded by a silver-colored ring, the DMC-G3 boasts sleekly refined profile with a variety of stylish colors – black, red, brown and white.
It is stunningly compact but yet comfortable to hold with the new ergonomically studied grip. Operation is also smooth and easy with optimum layout of control buttons and so on.
The DMC-G3 features 2 function buttons. Functions that normally have to be selected or switched from a menu can be assigned to these buttons for faster, easier operation. The ability to freely customize settings depending on your shooting style brings even greater mobility to the camera.
The Custom Mode 1 lets you instantly retrieve a pattern of frequently used settings. And Custom Mode 2 lets you register patterns for up to three more settings. Together, they store four sets of frequently used settings in memory, for instant recall with the mode dial.
You can select display style from the custom menu to match your shooting style.
