iA Mode with Intelligent D-Range Control

Simply Select the iA Mode and Press the Shutter Button

Both Photos and Movies Are Easy

If you've resisted buying a digital SLR camera because you think they're hard to use, your wait is over. The DMC-GH2 features the same iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode as the LUMIX compact models. In the iA Mode, the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose your shot and capture the moment. You just press, aim and shoot. Once you've selected the iA Mode, the detection and correction functions go to work to give you beautiful photos and videos with maximum ease.

Both Photos and Movies Have High-quality Images

The DMC-GH2's Intelligent D-range Control and advanced Intelligent Resolution technology give you both photos and videos with clearer, higher image quality. Even casual snapshots turn into superb photos, which makes this a very handy camera for catching everyday scenes, and its many versatile functions will be appreciated by experienced photographers as well.

* Some functions in the iA Mode will not be available depending on the lens that is mounted.

Advanced Intelligent Resolution Technology

The advanced Intelligent Resolution technology enables the recording of beautiful photo and high-definition video with higher quality signal processing. With the advanced Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas – outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas are automatically detected. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology advanced Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way according to the area. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording.

EXTENDED

With the DMC-GH2, the new “EXTENDED” option has been added for more natural looking to be printed in large size.

3 areas – outlines 1, detailed texture areas 2 and soft gradation areas 3 – are automatically detected and optimum signal processes are performed to each area.

(1) Outlines

Enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness.

(2) Detailed texture areas

Given moderate accentuation to look more finely detailed.

(3) Soft gradation areas

Superior noise reduction system of the Venus Engine is applied to make it smoother.

* The Intelligent Resolution function turns ON in the iA Mode or in some Scene Modes.
In other cases, turn ON the Intelligent Resolution from the menu to activate it.

Advanced Light Detection Intelligent D-range Control

The new Intelligent D-range Control offers even more natural looking by optimizing the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully including the blue color of the sky. An automatic backlight compensation function is activated whenever the camera detects the subject in backlight.

Scene Detection Intelligent Scene Selector with Touch-screen Operation

When the camera's in the iA Mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector automatically sets the Scene Mode to Scenery, Portrait, Macro*1, Night Portrait*2, Night Scenery or Sunset. The camera judges it from the various detection results such as focusing distance, inclusion of human face and brightness level of the circumstance*3. You are free from difficult settings every time scene changes when taking images with these most frequently used Scene Modes to get beautiful results even before you know.

*1 The focal range varies depending on the lens.
*2 In the iA Mode, the Night Portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off.
*3 With some subject and shooting conditions, it is just not possible to judge the best shooting details. When this happens, it is recommended that you shoot with the Scene Mode that best suits your purpose.

The Ultimate Combination with the Touch-screen Operation

The Intelligent Scene Selector is made even more convenient by being able to select the subject within the frame by touching it. Once the subject is touched, the camera judges the optimal settings and automatically switches to the appropriate shooting mode.

Subject Detection AF Tracking with Touch-screen Operation

Don't see anything above? Please make JavaScript effective or install the latest Flash Plug-in.

Once the AF subject is selected by touch control, it continues to track the subject even if it moves until you press the shutter. When you're taking pictures of active children, pets, sports scenes or subjects in a moving object, this function eliminates the need to press the shutter button halfway down repeatedly to readjust the focus. The AF Tracking makes sure you don't miss those once-in-a-lifetime shooting opportunities.

Quick AF

The DMC-GH2 features the Quick AF*1. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed halfway, while the Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take images quickly*2. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to the Quick AF, images of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry.

*1 The Quick AF is automatically turned on in the iA Mode and can be turned on or off in the P/A/S/M Mode. It can also be switched to the Continuous AF in the P/A/S/M Mode if desired. The Continuous AF does not work with lenses for which the focus mode cannot be set to the AFC. The Quick AF does not work together with the AF Tracking.
*2 The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.

Intelligent Technology That Recognizes Faces Face Detection AF/AE with Face Recognition

The Face Recognition is Great for Times Like These

When your subject is in a group...When your subject is in the back...When your subject moves...

The conventional face detection system captures a face with focus and appropriate exposure but sometimes it falls not on the face you want to capture most beautifully when there are several faces in the frame. The Face Recognition prioritizes focus and exposure right on the face of your special person.

The DMC-GH2 features the Face Recognition, a function that “remembers” faces. Register the person from the menu by taking his/her full-face portrait with his/her name. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus*1. Up to 3 persons' names can be displayed at once. In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using the Category Playback. The Face Recognition makes sorting archiving incredibly easy.
The Face Detection also features the Digital Red-eye Correction (Red-eye Removal). The camera takes care of the red-eye effect that often happens when shooting with a flash, to ensure attractive facial expression*2.

Face Recognition

Registration

Register the person by taking a full-face portrait to appropriately fit in the guideline.

Input of Personal Data

The name and birth date can be registered.

A maximum of 6 persons can be registered.

Take a clear, full-face portrait with eyes open looking straight at the camera*1. Adding a variation of angles and facial expressions may increase the accuracy of recognition.

Shooting

The registered person is automatically focused on, and up to 3 names can be displayed at once.

If the person is supposed to be 3 years or younger according to the registered birth date, the Baby Mode is activated.

When shooting vertically, the names also rotate for easy reading.

Playing Back

The Category Playback lets you choose to play only Face Recognition photos, if desired.

You can view a collection of the photos containing a specific person.

Face Detection AF

A person's face can be detected to set focus automatically.
(Up to 15 persons' faces can be detected at the same time.)

Face Detection AE

The Face Detection AE controls the exposure to adjust the brightness of the face properly.

Face Tracking

Once detecting the face, even if the subject moves, camera can track the subject accordingly.

Auto Flash under Backlight

The Flash is forced on against backlight condition if backlight compensation is not enough.
(The flash should be popped up in advance.)

Auto Flash Adjustment

After detecting exposure of the part of the face, the amount of the flash lighting is automatically adjusted.
(The camera activates the flash in the red-eye reduction mode when it detects a face.)

Digital Red-eye Correction(Red-eye Removal)

The occurrence of red-eye is automatically reduced by a pre-flash in the iA Mode and corrected by the Digital Red-eye Correction function.

*1 Turn the Face Recognition item ON and register the person with full-face portrait on the shooting menu in advance.
Recognition performance varies greatly depending on shooting conditions, i.e., according to factors such as angles, facial expression and lighting, so operation under all conditions cannot be guaranteed. Because the camera searches for faces that are similar to registered faces, there are cases where the faces are not correctly recognized when the registered image and the shooting image vary much. When facial characteristics are similar, particularly between parents and their children or brothers and sisters, the camera may not distinguish the faces.
*2 The Digital Red-eye Correction must be turned ON in the menu prior to use.
*3 Only with the lenses which supports the MEGA O.I.S.

Shake Detection MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)

The MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) that's built into Micro Four Thirds lenses detects and compensates for blurring caused by hand-shake*. So, you can get sharp, clear shots every time you shoot. It also works for zoom shots and macro shots, which are especially susceptible to hand-shake, and lets you shoot in dimly lit rooms or evening illumination, without a flash, to preserve the mood.
With the DMC-GH2, you can select whichever of 3 stabilization modes that suits your needs. By choosing the setting that best matches the situation, you get beautiful, blur-free shots with ease.

* When using a lens equipped with the MEGA O.I.S. Turn on the lens' O.I.S. switch before using.

This mode is ideal for panning action shots.

Motion Detection Intelligent ISO Control

The Intelligent ISO Control function* in the DMC-GH2 made possible by the Venus Engine detects subject movement and automatically adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light conditions. When it detects subject motion, it automatically raises the ISO setting and increases the shutter speed to prevent motion blur. On the other hand, when the subject is still and no movement is detected, it takes beautifully natural photos with a low ISO setting. The Intelligent ISO Control gives you stunning images with ease because there's no need for complicated settings.

* The Intelligent ISO Control function is automatically turned on in the iA Mode, and can be turned on or off in the P/A Mode to enable a maximum sensitivity setting.

The subject is blurred due to movement.

The subject is clear even though it moves, thanks to the I.ISO function.

The image of the still subject is very clear because the I.ISO function keeps the ISO setting low.

Auto Backlight Compensation

When there is strong backlighting, the background appears nice and bright, but the subject is dark. This function detects backlight condition and compensates it automatically in the iA Mode.
