Fast boot time enhances mobile performance

In general, most people who use a laptop on the move want a machine that is lightweight, durable, and has a long battery life. While past versions of the TOUGHBOOK Business-rugged PC focused on these aspects, with the CF-S9 we poured a lot of effort into shortening the OS boot time.
Nobody likes a laptop with a system that seemingly takes forever to start up. This can be especially frustrating when trying to get work done when you’re away from home or out of the office.
Simply put, long boot times are a major inconvenience. If you have a laptop with an OS that takes long time to boot up, you often find yourself putting it back in your bag before having a chance to get any work done.
The long boot time may even cause you to dread the thought of turning on your top.
The CF-S9 is an ultra-portable PC that eliminates all this hassle. It allows you to make the most of every spare minute, such as going over materials before meeting with a client or tackling some work while you’re in transit.
In any business meeting short boot times are a must. Having a laptop that boots up in a flash means you can jump right into product introductions, presentations, or demonstrations without keeping your customers waiting.

Fast Boot mode dramatically reduces the boot time

Normally when you turn on your PC, it runs through a number of tasks before it even accesses the hard disk. It first checks for any hardware failures, then checks all the peripheral devices that are connected.
However, external bootable systems, such as USB drives, take precedence over the internal hard disk. Thus, the PC also needs to check whether any of these devices are connected and responding.
It is only after your PC runs through all these checks that it finally accesses the hard disk and starts the OS.
Unfortunately this can eat up a lot of time.

With the CF-S9, there is no need to worry about long boot up times. This laptop is equipped with Fast Boot mode, which skips all the normal startup tasks and boots up the OS immediately.
Enabling Fast Boot mode dramatically cuts down on the boot time. When you turn on your lap it accesses the hard disk first, leaving the checks of the peripherals for later.

For the sake of reference, let’s compare the new CF-S9 to the current CF-T8/W8, which also has a 12.1" LCD display. It takes the CF-T8/W8 about 14 seconds to run through all the preliminary tasks before accessing the hard disk. However when Fast Boot mode is enabled on the CF-S9, it takes merely 3 seconds to access the hard disk and then quickly get the OS up and running.

*1: Fast Boot mode must be set up before it can be enabled. This mode reduces the amount of time it takes to access the hard disk. It does not necessarily reduce the amount of time it takes to start the OS.

Battery life unaffected by standard voltage processor

Though the CF-S9 is a ultra-portable PC with a 12.1" LCD display, it is equipped with a high-performance, standard-voltage Intel^® Core™ i5 processor. With the processing power of the Intel^® Core™ i5 processor, you can you work just as smoothly on the move as you can from your desktop PC in the office.
The one drawback of a standard voltage processor is that it consumes a large amount of power in exchange for high-performance. This elevated power consumption can shorten the laptop’s battery life. The CF-S9 design incorporates Panasonic’s original technology to reduce power consumption in other areas, thereby achieving a long battery life.
First, the CF-S9 uses a low-power LED backlight system as the light source for the LCD. This light is efficiently employed by the proprietary light guide plate, high-reflectivity reflector, and high-efficiency reflection sheet. These components enable the display of the CF-S9 to deliver the same level of visibility as standard LCDs while dramatically reducing power consumption.
The CF-S9 also features a battery system composed of eight cells. The capacity of each cell has been raised to 3100 mA, giving the laptop a longer battery life. This allows people to enjoy wireless communication and use their laptop for longer period of time.
The combination of an improved battery system and energy efficient LCD in the CF-S9 offsets the power consumption drawback of the Intel^® Core™ i5 processor, enabling you to get the most out of your laptop when using it for an extended period of time.

Some people may think that the eight cell battery system would make the CF-S9 heavier than previous laptops. To compensate for the added weight of the battery, we employed a number of measures to lower the weight, such as making parts and components thinner and lighter, while retaining durability. As a result, CF-S9 is as light and tough as the CF-T/W series.
