Global Training Program - Working in Japan

Shao Shan - Senior Engineer

Panasonic Corporation Singapore

1. Who are you and how long have you been working for Panasonic?

Hello, everyone, my name is Shao Shan, I working for Panasonic Singapore. I have been working here for three and half years.

2. What brought you to Panasonic?

Panasonic is one of the world’s largest consumer electronics manufacturers. I like the fact that the company is very systematic and organized in many perspectives, I feel I can learn in a systematic way, and use the knowledge I gain to develop good products. I am very pleased to see the products I have been involved in designing sold worldwide. It is great self-realization to me.

3. What is your current role in Panasonic?

There are a lot of cooperation projects between Japan and Singapore. I am responsible for IC design, followed by verification, mass layout and evaluation.

4. What is your career goal and dream?

My goal is to be able to lead a team and continue to design great efficient products. I also hope to create more patents in future.

5. What is most rewarding about being in the Working in Japan Program?

Besides advancing my technical skills, it is all about cultural exchange. Since there are so many collaboration projects, the communication is very crucial. As soon as I came here, I began to understand my Japanese counterparts much better, and could listen to their ideas. I started to speak in Japanese as much as I could, and tried to make many Japanese friends and understand Japanese culture.

That said, I am very lucky to have some other foreigners to work together with. With their support, I can at times express my ideas unhindered, also when explaining Singaporean culture. My co-workers now have better acceptance about Singaporean thinking and working styles. By the mutual exchange, I grow and get more self-confidence.

6. What is the benefit/contribution you would like to bring to your business unit after completing the WIJ Program?

I learned mass layout and IC design flow during this program. I would like to implement the same work flow after I go back to my country. Because the work flows here provoke us to solve issues much easier and smoothly. It is a great system that I would like to duplicate in my team in Singapore.
