Environmental Activities - "eco ideas" for Products

Our viewpoint of the issues

The graph on the left shows changes in energy consumption in Japan. Energy consumption in the industrial sector has remained virtually level, while household energy consumption has continued to rise.

The chart on the right shows a breakdown of household power consumption, where we can see that air conditioners, refrigerators, lighting equipment, and televisions make up almost 70% of the total consumption.

We consider that we have a major responsibility to improve the energy-saving performance of our home appliances, in order to reduce household energy consumption.

Examples of products

Tilted drum washer/dryer

The tilted drum washer/dryer uses our own globally pioneering heat pump technology to achieve a 70% reduction in power consumption compared to models from three years ago, and also uses substantially less water.

Bulb-shaped fluorescent lamp

With new technology such as the industry's first new quadruple coil, the 'Pa-look Ball Premier' bulb-shaped fluorescent lamp has reduced power consumption by 80% compared to our silica bulbs, as well as increasing product life by ten times.

System LSI "UniPhier®"

Many semiconductors are used in home appliances, and these represent important devices even in terms of improving energy-saving performance.

Energy-saving performance is influenced greatly by system LSI, such as the 'UniPhier®' used in a wide range of digital home appliances from mobile phones to home audio-visual products, and the 'PEAKS' that is used to generate high picture-quality images.

With the miniaturization of system LSI process technology from 180 nm in 2000 to 45 nm today, we have not only enabled higher functionality, but also the reduction of power consumption down to a third.

In addition, the intelligent power device (IPD) semiconductor elements for switching power supply use intermittent oscillation control, for thinned out oscillation according to the electrical power, to enable the standby power consumption to be reduced from 0.4 W to 0.07 W.

Vacuum insulation panels "U-Vacua"

The DC brushless motors used in washing machines have achieved a 50% reduction in power consumption compared to AC induction motors, through new technology such as high space-factor wire winding.

Our own 'U-Vacua' insulation material technology uses a combination of a porous core and vacuum insulation materials to achieve insulation performance ten times greater than that of urethane insulation material.

PanaHome's 'eco-life homes' use thermal insulation walls, energy-saving ventilation systems with under-floor geothermal sources, and solar power generation systems, to reduce annual electricity costs to around a third of those for conventional houses.

In addition, the 'Eco Cute' heat pump water heaters use natural coolant to enable a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional fuel-burning water heaters.

The wide range of home appliances featuring excellent environmental performance will reduce household energy consumption and lead to reduced CO2 emissions.

Together with sales campaigns such as the 'N's Eco Project,' our Panasonic Centers in Tokyo, Osaka, and as of July this year, Beijing, communicate detailed information on the performance of energy-saving products and the technology that supports them.

Through our advertising, PR, website, and 'Environmental Data Book,' we make it widely known that our energy-saving products reduce energy consumption and the emission of CO2.
