Panasonic was founded in 1918, and since then, we have been carrying out our business activities under the management philosophy, "Contribute to progress in society and to enriching people's lives through manufacturing."
And we have used the brand slogan, "Panasonic ideas for life" to express the thought.
Nowadays, global environmental problems have clearly developed into the biggest social issues the entire world has to address.
As Panasonic has been working hard trying to fulfill its mission to contribute to society, this is a significant theme that we must give first priority to.
I believe that the Panasonic Group must be the forerunner in the industry and take the lead in the Green Revolution. Making the most of our strengths, we want to make a contribution that starts with people's daily lives.
Having this kind of commitment, we have set as our goal, looking to 2018, the 100th anniversary of our founding, being the "No.1 Green Innovation Company in the Electronics Industry."
Making the "environment" central to all of our business activities, we are working to bring forth "Green Life Innovation" and "Green Business Innovation."
Through these initiatives, we will pursue the concept that the more our business grows, the better the global environment becomes, in other words, the integration of our contribution to the environment and business growth.
In our vision for the 100th anniversary of our founding, we set two targets as you see on this slide.
They are: the "No.1 in Green Indexes," and "Always meet Global Excellence Indexes."
As we simultaneously pursue these two targets, we aim to integrate our contribution to the environment and business growth throughout the entire Group.
Next, I would like to give you an framework of our "Green Plan 2018," which we newly formulated to realize the Green Indexes.
Our "Green Plan 2018" is an action plan which involves all of our employees, and it describes initiatives we should take to deal with global environmental issues as we move toward the year 2018.
Placing the Green Indexes as key pillars of the initiatives, we have set targets for five areas and will carry out this plan working in collaboration with various stakeholders in society.
This slide shows our targets in each category.
Next I would like to explain our targets and activities concerning each category.
The first theme is CO2 reduction.
A very large part of CO2 emissions related to our business activities are emitted when customers use our products.
As we continue to promote technological innovation in the development of energy-saving and energy-creating products, we believe that we have a big responsibility to provide convenient and easy-to-use products to customers around the world, but at the same time, we are obliged to stop global CO2 emissions from increasing.
As shown in the graph, total CO2 emissions are calculated by adding the amounts emitted from production activities and during product use and then deducting the amounts reduced in our energy creation business.
And we will ensure that the total emissions peak and decline thereafter.
In order to achieve this target, we newly set a "Size of contribution to reducing CO2 emissions" as a new management index.
We calculate the size of contribution by comparing the estimated amounts where no improvement was made since FY2006 with actual total amounts of emissions.
By visualizing reduction effect by our efforts and strengthening management systems, we will ensure that the total emissions peak and decline thereafter by achieving 120-million tons of CO2 reduction contribution by 2018.
Next, I will explain our target in the Energy Systems Business.
As we have promoted a concept, "virtually zero CO2 emissions in the entire home," we will develop it into comprehensive solutions for the entire town and spread the solutions all over the world.
We are actively promoting this business through various initiatives, such as working to establish a world top-group position in solar cells and fuel cells. And as a result, we will increase sales in the Energy Systems Business to three trillion yen or more in 2018.
Next, I would like to explain our activities for resources recycling, which is placed as one of the key initiatives.
Based on the knowhow we have cultivated so far, we will pursue recycling-oriented manufacturing to make the best use of resources.
In order to achieve this target, we have set a numerical goal to increase the use of recycled resources.
By 2018, we will increase the ratio of the amount of recycled resources used to that of total resources used to 16% by 2018.
We will develop technologies for making full use of recycled resources as well as recycling technologies in cooperation with material manufacturers and processing companies.
Furthermore, we will increase the global waste recycling rate to 99.5% through comprehensive approaches to reduce resource losses in manufacturing processes.
The ratio of fresh water on the planet is said to be only 2.5% of the earth's total water resources. We expect that water will become increasingly important in the future.
Being aware of the importance, we will reduce water consumption at our factories and globally promote manufacturing that maximizes the use of recycled water.
At the same time, we will increase the number of products that contribute to saving and recycling water.
Regarding the chemical substances, our policy is to take an action for the use of them even in regions and countries where there are no relevant laws or regulations.
Based on this policy, we are globally ensuring compliance with the EU RoHS Directive ahead of the mandatory schedule.
Toward the year of 2018, we will thoroughly identify chemical substances contained in our products, assess environmental impact of them, and voluntarily reduce and discontinue the use of these substances.
I would like to explain our goals and activities for biodiversity.
Until now, we have addressed this issue as part of our corporate citizenship activities. We will now move to the next phase and incorporate our efforts into our business activities in order to meet our goals for 2018.
Our approach comprises three categories including land use, procurement, and products.
For example, we will contribute to the creation of towns in urban areas where people can get close with living things by linking rivers, green spaces in parks and our business sites.
And as the first step, we will collaborate with the Osaka Prefectural government to establish a model project.
The next theme deals with products.
Up to now, we have globally focused on increasing the number of No. 1 environmentally-conscious product models.
From now on, we will further expand the scope of eco marketing, which we have implemented in each region.
By doing so, We will increase the number of No.1 environmentally-conscious models of products in all categories, and also increase the ratio of their sales to total sales to 30%, double the figure in FY2010.
However, we cannot meet any of the targets I have discussed so far on our own.
We will forge closer ties with procurement and logistics partner companies and accelerate our efforts to make greater environmental contribution.
In tandem with these efforts, we will proactively implement the Panasonic Eco Relay for Sustainable Earth.
In this initiative, our employees will promote global citizenship activities with our stakeholders.
We are planning to propel collaboration with society in various activities, such as human resource development and green lifestyle proposals.
And in order to bring forth the revolution of the society with our activities for green innovation, we will actively pour efforts for mutual communication with stakeholders.
Panasonic is referring to this two-way communication as "eR," which is short for 'eco ideas' Relations, and we will work on a variety of initiatives, starting with the 'eco ideas' Forum being held today,.
Aiming to be the No.1 Green Innovation Company in 2018, Panasonic will promote activities through the collaboration with stakeholders with a global perspective.
I greatly appreciate your continued support for Panasonic.
The Panasonic Group strives to be a Green Innovation Company with a global perspective
