Our Approach to Chemicals Management in Products and Factories

Our founder, Konosuke Matsushita established our Basic Business Philosophy and Seven Principles which underpin every action of Panasonic, and are the basis of our Code Of Conduct.

The code is implemented across our entire business operation, including Research & Development (R&D), where it states, “Through research and development we aim to achieve a better future. At the same time, we will try to prevent our technologies from being used in any way that might jeopardise the global environment, world peace, social justice or humanitarian activities.”

On the issue of Coexistence with the Global Environment, we promise that, “By setting appropriate goals based on prior assessments of environmental risks and impacts, we will pursue ever-higher environmental achievements.”

On the matter of product safety, our code states that, “We will give the utmost priority to product safety in all design, development, manufacturing and marketing and sales activities...”.

Additionally, we have our “Environmental Vision” which states that “Products and services are to be made with only environmentally-conscious materials through the efficient use of energy and resources”.

Being environmentally-conscious means aiming for improvement by decreasing environmental impact by all means, and this also includes Chemicals. Therefore, naturally we have to avoid as much as possible any chemicals that are considered to have a negative impact on the environment.

Outline

Aiming for manufacturing environmentally-conscious products in partnership with our suppliers, we released our first Green Procurement Standards (Version 4 issued in April 2006) in March 1999, and promote Green Procurement.
We request all our suppliers to establish, maintain, and improve their environmental management systems and the environmental performance of the materials by acquiring ISO 14001 certification, as well as to respect our environmental policies and principles , based on our Green Procurement Standards.

Green Procurement Standards

Four accreditation standards for suppliers
  1. Submission of non-use warranty certificates for the specified chemical substances based on the rank guidelines(including of nonuse of ‘Ozone-depleting substances (excluding HCFC)’ in manufacturing process of materials ).
  2. Presentation of Content Survey Sheets for managed substances (quantity) and input into GP-Web
  3. Establishment of Chemical Substances Management System and implementation of environmental quality assurance system audits
  4. Establishment of Environmental Management System (EMS)(Acquisition of ISO14001 certification, environmental principles and policies, environmental management plans, product assessment, environmental impact assessment, education, information disclosure, rationalization of distribution)
Nine materials selection standards
  1. Compliance with laws and regulations concerning recycled recourses and energy efficiency
  2. Nonuse of “prohibited substances”
  3. Survey of chemical substance content
  4. Nonuse of ‘Ozone-depleting substances (excluding HCFC)’ in manufacturing process of materials.
  5. Reduction in environmental impact of chemical substances, polluted air, water, soil, etc.
  6. Use of recycled resources and component parts, and energy and resources conservation through downsizing
  7. Implementation of recycling-oriented design
  8. Disclosure of environmental information about materials
  9. Above requirements 1 - 7 also apply to packaging materials

Green Procurement Standards Manual (Revision in Feb, 2010)

Particularly when selecting materials, we request our suppliers to cooperate with us for managing information on chemical contents in all parts and components to cope with prohibition of chemical substances which may have adverse effect to the environment and possible introduction of new regulations in the future, based on our Chemical Substances Management Rank Guidelines (Version 4.1 was issued in Oct 2008).

Chemical Substance Management Rank Guideline

In March, 1999, we published our Chemical Substances Management Rank Guidelines to effectively manage the use of chemical substances in manufacturing processes and products in consideration of their safety.

To comply with recent stricter regulations related to the use of chemical substances in products, the Chemical Substances Management Rank Guidelines was separated into ‘for Factories’ and ‘for Products’ versions respectively and the Chemical Substances Management Rank Guidelines (for Products) are quoted in Green Procurement Standards.

For Products:
Limited to management of prohibited specified chemical substances contained in products.
For Factories:
Limited to management and implementation of environmentally-conscious manufacturing activities.

This Guideline is intended for prohibition of chemical substances which have concern of adverse effect to the environment and for reduction of the amount used/transferred in manufacturing processes.
We greatly appreciate suppliers' cooperation to offer us materials and components which do not contain or use chemical substances prohibited to use or those under reduction target.

GP-Web System

We've been gathering information on the chemical contents in all parts and components we purchase from suppliers by using our own database, the GP-Web system since fiscal 2005.
